In Progress: BSC Operator SOP Monitoring

Client: Proconex

Sector: GMP Compliance / Cleanroom Operations

Technology: GrayVisions edge deployment + cognitive activity pipeline

Validation site: Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing (JIB)

Business Challenge

In upstream and aseptic manufacturing environments, Biosafety Cabinets (BSCs) are critical workspaces for sterile handling, mixing, and transfer of sensitive biological materials. These cabinets are designed to maintain product protection, operator safety, and environmental containment.

However, sterility inside a BSC depends entirely on the precision and compliance of human behavior:

  • Hand and tool movement must follow strict unidirectional airflow patterns

  • Surfaces must be disinfected methodically

  • No cross-zoning or glove contamination is allowed

  • SOP violations can invalidate entire batches or experiments

Despite well-documented protocols, these processes remain manual, unaudited, and vulnerable to deviation — often only addressed after something goes wrong.

The Graypaw Solution: Cognitive SOP Monitoring with GrayVisions

In collaboration with Proconex, GRPAW is piloting a vision-based compliance monitoring system inside BSCs, using the GrayVisions platform.

This system uses discreetly installed fisheye cameras inside the BSC — requiring only a few minutes to mount, with no need for precise alignment — to enable continuous cognitive monitoring of operator behavior during critical procedures.

Pipeline capabilities:

  • Object and hand tracking within the sterile field

  • Detection of critical SOP deviations (e.g., bidirectional movement, cross-contamination risk)

  • Motion and dwell time analysis

  • Verification of surface disinfection patterns and durations

  • Historical event tagging and video-linked metadata for QA review

Supervisors are notified of violations in real time or post-procedure, with access to annotated video, incident summaries, and operator-specific metrics — all without needing to enter the cleanroom.

Pilot Scope & Deployment

The pilot, currently underway at the Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing, includes:
- Multi-camera deployment across multiple BSCs
- Real-use procedural recordings with live annotation feedback
- Operator onboarding in simulated and semi-live GMP conditions

Initial use cases focus on training gap identification, real-time SOP violation alerting, and video-assisted deviation reviews to support quality teams and auditors.
